A truly smart home: furniture with Amazon Alexa built-in

Scavolini is embracing the connected home with Dandy Plus – its new smart kitchen, living room and bathroom collection. It is the first furniture designed with built-in Amazon Alexa, so consumers will be able to ‘talk’ to their homes.

Dandy Plus was conceived to appeal to a younger generation of people, who now simply expect a level of connectivity in their homes. This is where the idea to bring the voice of Alexa into the furniture originated.

The smart speaker is built into the Task Bar, which is secured to the wall as part of the kitchen, living room or bathroom furniture set up. The aluminium profile houses the speaker through which users can control appliances, their music, lights – or any other compatible devices. Plus, there are plug sockets and USB ports, along with shelves, accessories and containers for convenient charging. Not only that, but the worktops also have built-in wireless charging points.

To develop the new range, Scavolini partnered with leading architect, Fabio Novembre. He explains: “These young homeowners will decide how to interpret their connected kitchen, whether to prepare food there, or to listen to music while awaiting its delivery. Their society is a virtual community that uses Alexa to provide the right piece of advice at just the right time.”

In creating its future-ready range, Scavolini also included a nod to the past. Dandy was the Italian manufacturer’s best-selling kitchen in the 1980s, and it has now evolved into Dandy Plus for the 21st century.

It has a fresh, modern feel; the distinctive ‘bridge’ design that wraps round all the units, curved corners and bright colours all define the collection. Five colours are available for the customisable elements such as handles and buttons – Coral Red, Mustard Yellow, Agave Blue, Prestige White and Slate Black.

Fabiana Scavolini, company CEO, commented: “On the one hand, the shapes of Dandy Plus bring to mind our best-selling model from the 1980s, and on the other it is a clear tribute to Italian design and a solution to the current needs of consumers who are increasingly connected.

“In the partnership with Novembre Studio, we started by thinking about the increasingly pervasive role of technology in our everyday activities and in our homes, and ended up creating a smart and comprehensive project.

“By incorporating Alexa, we gave Dandy Plus a voice: a smart, innovative and comprehensive project, designed for everyone who wants an all-over digital experience at home too.”
