Fire devastates Richer Sounds Exeter store

The Richer Sounds store in Exeter has been severely damaged by a fire that broke out on Wednesday, July 27.

The blaze is believed to have started in the basement of the Sidwell Street store and an investigation is currently under way to ascertain its cause.

Nearby homes had to be evacuated and 15 fire engines were called in to deal with the incident.

The shop has ceased trading until further notice, however directors have reassured Exeter store staff that they will not suffer any loss of wages while it remains closed.

The staff will be answering calls on 0333 900 0061 and will be able to offer customers support and advice regarding home entertainment purchases.

Deputy managing director Jez Avens said: “We’re extremely thankful that no one was seriously injured. The loss of stock and damage to property is inconvenient and upsetting, but these things are replaceable; people are not. Our focus is now on securing and reinstating the premises – both the shop and the flats above. We’re also putting in contingency plans so that our valued customers experience minimal disruption.”

Director Julie Abraham thanked firefighters for their swift action.

“We cannot praise the emergency services enough,” she said. “Responses from the fire brigade and police were exemplary and we’re grateful to the 50+ officers who helped to contain the fire and offered advice on how best to minimise damage.”
