ESF joins government working group on safety recalls

Electrical Safety First is among key industry representatives chosen to sit on the new government working group that has been tasked with urgently providing recommendations to improve the safety of white goods.

The Working Group on Product Recalls and Safety brings together experts from the fire service, Trading Standards, consumer groups and the electrical industry.

It was set up following a serious fire in Hammersmith, London, caused by a faulty tumble-dryer.

Issues to be tackled by the working group include establishing the causes of white-goods fires, marking appliances to make them easier to identify after a fire, and a code of practice for product recalls.

Consumer Minister Margot James has set a deadline of the end of this year for the group to report back with its interim findings.

Said Phil Buckle (pictured), chief executive of Electrical Safety First: “We are delighted to be co-opted on to this group. With the limited success of recalls and well over 200 electrical items recalled in the past four years, it is evident that the recall system needs to be amended.”
