Amazon Prime Day bigger than Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Amazon Prime Day has overtaken Black Friday and Cyber Monday to become the biggest shopping day in the online retail giant’s history.

Now in its third year, the one-day discount event took place on July 11 over a 30-hour period, and saw sales soar by more than 60 per cent, compared with the same event last year.

Sales growth experienced by small businesses and entrepreneurs was even higher, Amazon said.

The most popular purchase both in the UK and globally was the Echo Dot speaker with Alexa voice assistant.

Not only was it the best-selling Amazon device this Prime Day, but was the best-selling product from any manufacturer in any category across Amazon globally.

Amazon also reported record sales of its Echo, Fire tablets and Kindle devices, while its new Element 55in 4K Ultra HD smart LED TV – Amazon Fire TV Edition – was the best-selling TV deal in Amazon history. It sold “record units” in less than four hours.

Prime Day also saw more than 45,000 headphones purchased in the UK.

There were also more signs-ups to Amazon Prime membership on July 11 than on any other day in Amazon history.

“To those customers who tried Prime for the first time and our long-time members, thank you for a great Prime Day,” said Greg Greeley, vice-president of Amazon Prime. “Our teams around the world will keep working to add more and more to your membership, so Prime continues to make your life better every day. We are already looking forward to our Prime Day celebration next year.”

Amazon UK also saw one of the fastest deliveries made on Prime Day, with an Echo Dot ordered at 14:46 sent out from Amazon’s Erdington delivery station in Birmingham and delivered 15:00 to a post code in Sutton Coldfield, taking just 14 minutes and eight seconds.

“Prime members in the UK have loved Prime Day, in fact the day was our biggest day of the year so far and by 9pm customers had already ordered more items than on Prime Day last year,” said Amazon UK country manager Doug Gurr. “Alexa devices have been particularly popular. Echo and Echo Dot have been our best-selling Prime Day products on, and we’re looking forward to many more customers being introduced to Alexa for the first time.

“It is great to see that the positive customer feedback on Prime Day coincides with the announcement that we rank first in the UK for customer satisfaction in the latest UK Customer Satisfaction Index – the fourth consecutive time that has topped the index.”
