Samsung last night revealed the winner of the UK’s first media art competition, the Samsung Art+Prize.

The competition is designed to increase the awareness of new media art in the UK and was won by Semiconductor – the artistic duo of Joe Garhardt and Ruth Jarman, whose entry, “Magnetic Movie, 2007” is pictured. Second prize, and £5,000, went to Lucky PDF (an artistic collective).

The judges also bestowed a lifetime achievement award, and £5,000, on David Hall, who was selected by the public as the winner of the Samsung Art+Prize audience award.

The judges included leading directors and curators from the UK, including Louise Shannon from the V&A, David Bailey from the International Curators Forum and Lina Dzuverovic from Curator 22.

The work of all 10 shortlisted artists will be showcased at the Samsung Art+Prize exhibition at the BFI Southbank until January 29.

said Andy Griffiths, managing director of Samsung Electronics UK and Ireland: “Our main ambition in creating the Samsung Art+Prize is to raise awareness of this exciting new art genre, and in doing so, inspire future generations of artists.”

He added: “It’s been a great experience working with leading industry figures on this project and I have been hugely impressed with the exceptional standard of works from our shortlisted artists. On behalf of everyone at Samsung, I’d like to congratulate the winners, Semiconductor for their inspirational piece.”
