Samsung has confirmed that its 55in ‘Super’ organic light-emitting diode (Oled) TV will be released in the UK later this year.

The ultra thin TV, understood to be made from a single pane of glass and measuring 8mm thick, only slightly thicker than a Galaxy Tab, was unveiled at the CES show, Las Vegas, in January.

It is thought that the TV will be available in the second half of the year and although there is no indication on price so far, it is estimated that it will be in the upper echelons of the price scale as it is rumoured to have 3D technology and be internet connected.

The TV promises amazing depth of colour as no colour filter is needed and the light output works on a pixel-to-pixel basis. The TV will also include a dual-core processor and 3D support.

Samsung’s main rival LG, also announced its own Oled 55in set at the show which is only 4mm thick, weighs 7.5kg and will be equipped with 3D technology.

Samsung is considering its options for its LCD flat screen television business which has slumped due to tough economic conditions and emerging competition from China.

Most television manufacturers are now shifting to Oled technology which is already used in many high-end smart phones and is expected to become standard in all televisions in the future.
