| Game to close 43 outlets | |
| 26 February 2010 Video game retailer Game is to close 43 outlets following a review of its store portfolio, putting 247 jobs at risk. The group, which currently has 682 stores, is to close 12 Game shops, six Gamestation outlets and all 25 of its concessions in Debenhams department stores. “We regularly review our entire store portfolio, including our concessions, to maximise the opportunities to reach customers while also ensuring that the business is running as effectively as possible,” said the retailer in a statement. The review along with the “tougher market conditions” anticipated this year had led to the decision to close the outlets, it said. The majority of sites earmarked for closure are near other outlets belonging to the Game Group, and the company said it would help each customer affected by a closure to transfer to their nearest store as well as online. It also said it would try to help staff find other jobs within the group. “We will provide extensive support to the teams in each store,” said the company. “However, with deep regret, we have had put 247 employees at risk of redundancy. We will do our utmost to redeploy roles if possible, and have started consulting with all affected employees in the 43 sites.” It added: “We are very focused on supporting our people, and thank them for their continued hard work and understanding.” | |
