| Freesat expands BBC iPlayer trial | |
| 11 January 2010 The BBC and Freesat are to expand the beta trial of BBC iPlayer on Freesat by formally releasing the code needed to access the service. The trial is the first time BBC iPlayer has been delivered on a subscription-free TV service. It was initially limited to a small number of users, however following positive feedback from this group and high levels of interest from Freesat users, the trial is now being opened up to all Freesat users who have the right equipment. Emma Scott, Freesat’s managing director, said: “Initial feedback of the trial has been really positive, with trial users able to make sure they didn’t miss some of the fantastic programming available over Christmas. “For many, it was the first time they had accessed BBC iPlayer on the television, and there were high levels of satisfaction with the service itself as well how easy it was to set up and operate. “I’m really pleased that we can now expand the number of Freesat viewers who can now access BBC iPlayer.” To access BBC iPlayer on Freesat, viewers will need a Humax Freesat HD or Humax Freesat+ digital box connected to a satellite dish and a broadband service of at least 1 Mbps. Once the digital box box is connected, access to BBC iPlayer is via the red button service while watching any BBC channel. When the BBC Red Button homepage loads, users should type in the code 5483 and press OK. A message will appear saying “Number not found”, however, after a few seconds BBC iPlayer will load on screen.
