| CES 2010 Blog: by Sean Hannam | |
| 06 January 2010 Well, it may be freezing cold and snowing thick and fast in the UK, but here at CES in Las Vegas the weather is sunny and things are hotting up nicely. As I’m writing this, the world’s largest technology show is yet to officially open, but several of the major CE brands have held press conferences in advance of the event. On the press front, this year’s CES feels busier than ever – you only have to look at the queues of journalists outside the conference venues – some of whom have been turning up an hour and half before the doors open to ensure they get the best seat in the house. It’s just a shame that the press room in the Venetian hotel is so tiny and, ironically, the free Wi-Fi keeps on dropping out. Sadly, the press facilities on offer don’t reflect the high-tech nature of the show and aren’t suitable for the media frenzy here in Vegas. I gave up trying to find a seat and a signal and went back to my hotel suite to write this blog post. So what’s the big buzz here at CES? Well, unsurprisingly, 3D is the main theme, with big announcements from the likes of LG, Sony, Panasonic and Samsung. Prior to the show, Sky announced that its 3DTV service, which is due to launch this year, will be compatible with 3D ready TV sets from the aforementioned manufacturers. These sets will be officially unveiled at CES 2010. So, this year, we can expect to see 3D TV sets from several major brands available in the UK, as well as 3D home cinema systems and Blu-ray players. Earlier today, I was invited to a special pre-CES press briefing by LG UK. I can report that LG’s new consumer electronics products line-up for the UK will include 3DTV, Freeview HD, Freesat HD, OLED, wireless HD, a new premium home entertainment sub brand called Infinia and strengthened broadband TV capabilities, including wireless internet and Skype. You can read the full story here. Wireless HD is one of the other popular themes here at CES – in fact, UK company Provision has developed what it claims is the world's first consumer electronics technology capable of securely streaming live HD video content across all the rooms of a home. The system, called AXAR1500, streams HD video content from a Blu-ray player, PVR or HD set top box to AXAR enabled TVs or Wi-Fi connected PCs and mobile phones throughout the home. Electronic books are also one of the other hot topics here in Vegas, with Samsung unveiling its first e-Books at its official press conference. In fact, while I was walking through the shopping mall opposite my hotel, I saw a Sony stall that was solely dedicated to selling the e-reader. I wonder if I could get an electronic version of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?
